Former Everton striker Ian Marshall returned to Merseyside in glorious fashion when he scored in the 90th minute to send Liverpool crashing to their second home defeat in four days.

Marshall, only in Leicester's side because Emile Heskey has a throat infection, got on the end of Andy Impey's long ball and fired home past David James from 20 yards for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 win for Martin O'Neill's team.

Referee Paul Alcock left Hillsborough for the second time in seven months under a cloud of controversy last night after Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle played out a 1-1 draw.

In perhaps the most infamous incident of the season, former Sheffield Wednesday star Paolo Di Canio received an 11-game ban for pushing the referee.

Wednesday supporters had apparently forgiven Alcock, but Alcock found himself in the middle of another highly controversial incident when Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek appeared to win the ball in a penalty-box challenge with Rob Lee.

But to the amazement of everyone inside the ground Alcock pointed to the spot. Alan Shearer stepped up to send Srnicek the wrong way for his 19th goal of the season. However, Philip Scott got an equaliser for Danny Wilson's side in the 52nd minute.
