Club membership: As the season gets into full swing, John O'Sullivan believes there are great deals to be had

"I sent the club a wire stating: please accept my resignation. I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member."

- Groucho Marx

Location, location, location is a catchphrase beloved of estate agents and has spawned the odd television programme to boot but it is also fundamentally applicable to the financial considerations in joining a golf club in Ireland.

Quite apart from those golfers whose wallets or purses permit them to join clubs like Mount Juliet, the K Club, Druids Glen, the Old Head of Kinsale and others in that financial stratosphere, there is a significant outlay for those sourcing membership in the Dublin Metropolitan region and adjoining counties.

That's if you can get in. Many of the old, private clubs in the Dublin region are closed for membership and any influx is strictly rationed. In the survey below, the majority don't keep a waiting list per se, as it would be too cumbersome to keep those sort of numbers on file. It would require a separate office to cater for those applications alone.

There is, though, a practice in the metropolitan region of accepting applicants as pavilion members for a nominal fee. It allows them very limited access, principally in terms of a certain number of green fees and rationed access to the course. Thereafter there is a stepped progression when vacancies arise in five-day or six-day categories.

The entrance fee for many of the aforementioned brackets is a five-figure sum that ranges anywhere between 10,000-20,000 with the annual subscription over 1,000, a sum fleshed out with taxes, GUI fees and in most cases, food and bar vouchers that are redeemable on the club premises.

This scale of financial outlay is also evident in other cities, notably Cork and Limerick, while Connemara's big contingent of Dubliners holidaying during the summer ensures membership is oversubscribed, the cost aping those of the capital city. The entrance fees merely reflect the demand for places and there seems little shortage of golfers willing to part with the aforementioned numbers.

For those who are a little more constrained in terms of their budget, the commute to play may have to be longer but it's worth checking around as there is value out there. Many will be envious of those living in Westport, for example.

Westport Golf Club boasts a wonderful championship course - you can look at Croagh Patrick while playing - and is certainly among the best parkland layouts in the country. Owing to a small local community, the value is stellar in terms of their entrance fee of 1,000. There is no waiting list and there is even an annual subscription to encourage beginners of 200 for the first year. There is a sizeable Polish community in the town and four have already joined the club with the hope that more will follow.

Ballinrobe is another club who will welcome prospective members. A 40-minute drive from Galway, they are looking at that market. They are proactive in their quest, going into the local schools and offering youngsters the opportunity to play the sport. They are awaiting final confirmation from the Connacht Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland, hoping they will set up their headquarters there, much as the GUI have done in Carton House.

Several clubs have waived entrance fees in the hope of attracting members while others like Portumna offer attractive family package deals.

One incontrovertible fact is the value and importance of encouraging youngsters who want to play the sport to join a club. Quite apart from the social aspect there is the fact that most clubs offer considerably diminished entrance fees to long-standing junior and juvenile members. Your offspring will probably thank you in later life.

Many of the clubs, including Castlerock, do more than just accept juvenile subscriptions, organising competitions and coaching and in the case of the Ulster club, hosting an inter-club competition with the 19th hole dedicated to chips and soft drinks.

There is definitely value out there it's just a question of finding it . . . or maybe living in the west of Ireland.
