KING'S Hospital had to wait until the final minutes before defeating Cistercian College, Roscrea, in the first round of the Leinster Schools' Senior Cup (Section B) at Portlaoise yesterday.

A try by Richard Langford in the dying seconds, converted by Robert Knowlan, sent the Dubliners in front for the first time.

Though they had to wait until the final minutes for the deciding score, Kings Hospital just about deserved their success if only for the manner in which their attack subdued their opponents throughout the second period.

A great run from defence by Roscrea captain Dermot Phelan set up their early try - scored by Phelan. John Bresnihan added she extra points.

Then Knowlan reduced the lead with a penalty goal to leave the Dubliners still 7-3 in arrears at the interval.

Almost the entire second period proved to be a battle of the forwards with neither side making any leeway before Langford's winning try.

Des Jackson has become the latest player to join the exclusive club of players who have scored loo tries. The 29-year-old half, who won representative honours with Leinster on the wing, joined Old Wesley 11 years ago before breaking into the senior team two years later.
