Cricket Australia v India, second TestAnil Kumble's devastating spell of bowling helped India edge the opening day against Australia in the second Test yesterday - but Shane Warne had the last word by taking a Test record-equalling wicket.

Kumble took seven of the visitors' final eight wickets as the tourists slumped from 136 without loss to 235 all out in Chennai.

Warne then claimed his 532nd Test victim to equal Muttiah Muralitharan's world record as the hosts closed on 28 for one.

The 35-year-old moved level with the Sri Lankan after having Yuvraj Singh caught behind by Adam Gilchrist for eight.

The leg-spinner looks certain to claim the record outright today if he exploits the same areas that gave Kumble figures of seven for 48 off 17.3 overs.

However, it was spin partner Harbhajan Singh who made the initial breakthrough by taking the wickets of Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer after the openers put on 136.

Simon Katich and Damien Martyn added 53 runs to the total before Martyn gloved a ball from Kumble to Yuvraj at short-leg to depart to what proved to be the final ball of the afternoon session.

That wicket would ultimately turn out to be a critical one, because Kumble, with his tail up and backed by a jubilant home crowd, was virtually unplayable in the 20 overs after the interval.

Within minutes of returning from tea, he had Darren Lehmann caught behind for a duck and first Test hero Michael Clarke trapped lbw for five.

It was to get even better for the ecstatic Indian fans as Gilchrist (3), Warne (4), Jason Gillespie (5) and Michael Kasprowicz (4) all fell in rapid succession, before Glenn McGrath's farcical run-out completed Australia's demise. Katich (36) carried his bat.

That left India with an awkward hour of batting and Clarke dropped what should have been a regulation catch and Yuvraj got a reprieve. But Warne tempted him to edge one behind in the final over the day.

Meanwhile, Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been ruled out of the third Test against India because his broken thumb has not healed.

The 29-year-old batsman fractured his left thumb while fielding at slip during last month's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final loss to hosts England.

Ponting, who had further X-rays yesterday, said he hoped to be fit to play in the fourth Test starting in Bombay on November 3rd.
