Killester bounce back

Rarely has the ESB Superleague started in such unpredictable mode

Rarely has the ESB Superleague started in such unpredictable mode. Just when it seemed Killester - the title-holders - were set to struggle, they bounced back this weekend with a 91-85 win away to Limerick.

Having lost their opening two games, Killester were already under pressure to pick up some points. With a well-balanced performance here that reward was never in doubt as they led by 10 points at the halfway stage thanks to a fiery display from Eric Jackson. Although Cleotis Brown helped claw Limerick back to four points within the final quarter, Killester refused to crack and held on for the win.

Yesterday's meeting between Killarney Lakers and UCD Marian had promised sparks and it didn't disappoint. Despite trailing by 25 points early in the second quarter, Killarney staged a driving comeback to topple the league leaders UCD Marian, eventually winning out 100-90.

That leaves the Kerry club with maximum points from their opening three games and sets them up nicely for another a top-of-the-table clash with Neptune in Killarney on Wednesday.

Once again Billy Gilligan was outstanding for the home side with triple double statistics including 42 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists.

Team captain Shane Horgan had pushed Killarney in front but they still trailed by one, 89-90, with one minute on the clock. Then came Gilligan's crucial four-point score in the last minute that ensured the game was put out of Marian's reach.

Elsewhere, Waterford staged another remarkable comeback to steal a 96-87 win over St Vincent's, while Tolka Rovers were left suffering a 91-89 loss to Neptune, despite leading into the final minutes.

Tolka were actually down four points midway through the final quarter, but levelled again and then went up four points 82-78 with three minutes remaining. But Kenny Gamble inspired Neptune in the closing moments and scored their final four baskets.

In the women's league, both Tolka Rovers and the Wildcats suffered surprise defeats respectively to the University of Limerick and Killester. There was also an historic first league win for Glanmire, who defeated Meteors 58-45.
