Bangladesh took on India in Dhaka on Friday in the country's inaugural Test match following its admission to the exclusive 10-nation Test club - a status granted in June and greeted by wild celebrations across the south Asian country.

A beaming Saber Hossain Chowdhury, chief of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), declared the Test match "the third most historic event in our national life." The other two national landmarks are the 1971 independence and the adoption, this year, of a UN international mother tongue day to commemorate protests over the suppression of Bengali when Bangladesh was still a province of Pakistan.

The announcement that Bangladesh was joining England, Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, the West Indies, South Africa and Zimbabwe as a Test nation prompted spontaneous celebrations on the streets.
