GOLF/Qualifying school: England's Simon Wakefield posted his second consecutive round of three under par 69 to stay at the top of the leaderboard at 138 on day two of the European Tour Qualifying School finals in Spain yesterday, while Norway's Lars Petter Brovold carded a sensational 11 under par 61 to equal the lowest ever score at the finals.

The Irish contingent however, need something special if they are to contest the final two rounds on Monday and Tuesday in the race for the 30 places on the regular Tour next season.

David Higgins is the best in a tie for 50th place on 147 after a second round 72. Two shots back come Raymond Burns and Colm Moriarty after both players added rounds of two over par 74 yesterday.

Stephen Browne and Philip Walton have a lot of ground to make-up if they are to survive the cut tomorrow night and go forward for the final 36 holes.

Browne fired a 77 while Walton improved on his first round of 76 with a 74 for a 150 total.

Meanwhile Brovold started the week with a round of seven over par 79, but his fantastic second round effort over the New Course at San Roque Club saw him move from seven over at the beginning of the day to four under at the close of play - two adrift of Wakefield and just one shot behind Sweden's Joakim Backstrom and Frenchman Francois Delamontagne.
