Munster Senior Cup final/ Shannon 28; Garryowen 10: Shannon made history at Thomond Park yesterday when they became the first club to win the Munster Senior Cup in five successive seasons.

It was the 16th success in the competition for Shannon since 1960 and their fifth win in six finals against Garryowen.

Former Munster and Ireland skipper Mick Galwey took no part in the game and so missed out on what would have been a record 11th winner's medal.

Shannon got off to the ideal start when Tom Cregan landed a penalty after only three minutes.

The first try came after 27 minutes when full back David O'Donovan went over. Four minutes later, Brian Tuohy made a great individual break for a classic try, which Cregan converted.

Jeremy Staunton kicked a penalty for Garryowen two minutes before the interval, and when Clem Casey powered over for their try on 54 minutes the game was suddenly back in the melting pot.

But a Cregan penalty after 75 minutes and tries in the final moments by Mossie Lawler and Cregan wrapped it up for Shannon.
