The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) yesterday issued a statement in support of "the courageous, historic stand" taken by the Cork hurling panel on Friday.

The entire Cork panel has withdrawn their services until the Cork County Board improves the treatment and facilities to intercounty players.

Dessie Farrell, the chief executive of the GPA, called the Cork County Board's treatment of "these outstanding athletes" as "scandalous and intolerable". The response to the list of demands outlined by the players has, he said, been disdainful and the wider GAA public in the county should engage with their representatives to ensure a change of attitude.

"While the GPA executive recognises that complex, cultural problems exist between the Cork hurlers, their county board and their management, our backing for the players is unequivocal."
