Ireland’s Séamus Power has continued his strong form by claiming his first PGA Tour title in a play-off with JT Poston at the Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

The 34-year-old from Waterford and his American opponent went par-for-par through five holes in a nerve-wracking play-off at Keene Trace Golf Club before Poston bogeyed the sixth extra hole, the par-four 18th, while Power tapped in for par.

Power had earlier mixed six birdies with a bogey, on the par-three ninth, for a closing 67 that lifted him to the top of the leaderboard at 21 under par.

Overnight leader Poston, chasing his second Tour title and his first in two years, ended on the same score after double-bogeying the par-five 15th then struggling with a three-put bogey on the 16th en route to a 70.

Poston’s compatriot Sam Ryder finished tied for third on 20-under with India’s Anirban Lahiriafter after each carded 65.

Ben Taylor of England finished 15-under and six strokes back from Power and Poston, with countryman Tom Lewis a further four shots behind.

Power, who came into the week after five straight top-20 finishes including ties for eighth in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and John Deere Classic, does not earn a spot in next year’s Masters despite the victory, since the tournament coincided with The Open Championship, where Masters rights were awarded.

He did, however, secure his PGA Tour card and entry into next year’s PGA Championship, The Players and the Tournament of Champions.
