Golf: Australia's Mathew Goggin produced three birdies on his final four holes to card a three-under 69 for a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Australian PGA Championship at Coolum today.

Compatriots Geoff Ogilvy (67) and Australian Masters champion Rod Pampling (68) are tied for second a stroke further back on 11 under par at the Hyatt Regency resort course in Queensland.

Goggin, the joint leader after the second round, had a mixed day with two birdies and two bogeys before his birdie blitz in the closing four holes, which included a remarkable approach on the last to set up the birdie.

"I played quite well today and threw a few away during the middle of the round where I had a couple of three putts and didn't take advantage of some good play," said Goggin.

"(I) made a mess of some easy up and downs so it was nice to finish off strong...and get in with a respectable score.

"It was a good shot and a good way to finish," Goggin added of his six-iron from 150 metres on the 18th that landed within a metre for an easy tap-in.

"There is nothing better than closing out a round with a birdie."

Joint overnight leader Jarrod Lyle (71), who matched the course record 63 yesterday, produced a solid front nine before he faltered on the run home with three bogeys in the final six holes to slip back into a tie for fourth on 10-under.
