A Europa League campaign that began in June, against NSI Runavik of the Faroe Islands, had seemed set to continue into the new year after Fulham scored twice in the first half, and despite a second-half goal from Hans Henrik Andreasen there seemed little chance of Martin Jol's side failing to progress into the knockout stages.

Kerim Frei, operating on the left for Fulham, burst along that corridor and beyond Ruud before finding Bobby Zamora in the area. The forward’s instant touch was a precise lay-off to Clint Dempsey, behind him, and the striker blazed home with his left foot.
Four minutes later, Frei had his first goal for the club. A mistake by Bernard Mendy allowed Moussa Dembele to collect the ball on the right and his reverse pass to the 18-year-old was smartly finished.
