Yvonne Flynn has been called up to make her full international debut in the European women's team tennis championship in Malta on November 28th, 29th and 30th. The Division II group, which Ireland will contest with Israel, Slovenia and the host country, will take place at the Marsa Sports club. Slovenia are favourites to win the event.

Ireland's resources have been severely depleted by a career-threatening injury to Yvonne Doyle and by the fact that Karen Nugent is recovering from illness. Fortunately, USbased scholarship student Claire Curran is available. The team will be led by Irish number one Gina Niland.

Plans are also in train for Ireland's challenge in the equivalent championship for men to be staged in Belfast on December 5th, 6th and 7th. Irish number one Scott Barron and non-playing captain Peter Wright are the only selections made so far.

With a number of US-based players keen to get in the team, a trial may be in order, although the selectors intend to name the side next week.
