Men's Home Internationals: Ireland's defence of the Home Internationals title petered out on the final day of the championship as they lost heavily to host nation Scotland at Prestwick and ended up with the wooden spoon.

Mark Gannon's side, winners of the crown the last time the famous Ayrshire links held the event in 1992, crumbled to an 11-4 defeat against a rampant Scottish side who were pipped to the title by a mere point by England.

The English overpowered Wales 10-5 and captured the Raymond Trophy by virtue of the number of outright wins collected from their three games - 22 compared to Scotland's 21.

It was the fourth successive year that the Scots, who last won the championship at Carnoustie in 2000, had to settle for the runners-up spot.

Ireland still harboured hopes of retaining the trophy they won at Ballybunion 12 months ago going into the closing day of action but their title ambitions suffered a damaging early blow as they lost the morning foursomes 4-1.

Buoyed by their morning performance, the Scots went on the rampage in the afternoon singles and won 7-3.

Former Junior Open champion Cian McNamara was three up with eight to play against Jonathan King but lost on the final green while Irish Amateur runner-up Michael McGeady also went down on the 18th after being two up with four to play against Jamie McLeary.

Ireland's misery was compounded in the final match when British Amateur champion Stuart Wilson overhauled Darren Crowe's four hole lead on the back nine to win by two holes.

"Obviously we are very disappointed with the way we played today," lamented Irish team captain Gannon.

"We were really struggling after losing the foursomes so heavily and that left us with an uphill climb."
