Dublin 0-13 Roscommon 0-7:A YOUNG man whose three uncles won over 50 Laois senior championship hurling medals at the same venue mounted the steps in Portlaoise on Saturday night to become the first Dubliner to receive the Independent Cup in 37 years. It was fitting Denis Bastick should receive the trophy because in the second half when Roscommon threatened he scored an excellent point.

Dublin's Karl Connolly and Jonathan Cooper posted points before Roscommon scored through Derek Moran from placed balls. Dublin stretched their lead to three but a strong finish saw Fintan Cregg send over points and at the break Dublin led 0-6 to 0-5.

Points from Cooper and Connolly stretched the lead to four and Roscommon's only response was a point by Colm Garvey. Dublin introduced former senior player Darren Homan and his experience proved crucial.

SCORERS: Dublin - K Connolly and A Darcy 0-3 each; J Cooper and W Finnegan 0-2 each; D Bastick, D Homan and O O'Gara 0-1 each. Roscommon - D Moran 0-2; F Dolan, F Cregg, B Higgins, E Towey and C Garvey 0-1 each.
