Dublin still seem to be coming to terms with the resignation of manager Mickey Whelan for they gave a very lacklustre display in disposing of a limited Wexford side in Enniscorthy yesterday. Victory earned Dublin their first points of the campaign but their display, particularly in the second half, was undistinguished, and they went 26 minutes without scoring.
In the early stages Dublin looked as if they were determined to put the Whelan saga and the ensuing pressure behind them. They opened brightly shooting three points in the opening five minutes without reply through Ciaran O'Hare, Declan Darcy and Brian Stynes.
Scott Doran opened Wexford's account in the sixth minute but Dublin resumed their supremacy and four quick points, from Darcy, Stynes and Ciaran Whelan (two), edged them into a 0-7 to 0-2 half-time lead.
Dublin's attack struggled dismally in the second half, but all Wexford could manage during this period of supremacy were points from Michael Dillon and a Leigh O'Brien 45.
In between, Dublin's Jim Gavin brought a fine save out of David O'Sullivan, but Wexford missed two clearcut goal opportunities with David Byrne twice depriving Doran.
After Gavin had shot his side's first score of the second half, a point in the 26th minute, Ciaran O'Hare wrapped up Dublin's victory with a goal two minutes before the end.
