Dual star Barry has jaw broken by opponent

Wexford SFC: Dual star Redmond Barry has had his season ruined after suffering a broken jaw in a Wexford football championship match on Saturday.

The St Anne's clubman - who played a key role in Wexford's hurling and football league and championship campaigns this year - was playing in the county senior quarter-final at Wexford Park against Wexford town side Sarsfields when he was felled by several punches as he waited to take a free.

The centre forward was left stretched on the ground as inter-county referee James Owens brandished a straight red card at Sarsfields defender John Bergin.

Barry was taken to Wexford General Hospital, where his jaw was found to be broken in two places.

A clearly angry Geoff Barry, father of the injured player, said: "It's the same injury he received in 2000 when playing rugby. He will now attend Cork Regional Hospital this morning (Monday) to have an operation and his jawbone wired up.

"It's very annoying and upsetting that something like this should happen on a sportsfield. He has played both intercounty hurling and football all year against the best of opposition and nothing like this ever happened . . . It's shattering for Redmond."

Barry, an outstanding rugby player during his college days in Roscrea, also missed out on playing for UCD in yesterday's Dublin senior hurling championship.

Wexford County Board chairman Seán Quirke said they would await the referee's report, and then the county disciplinary committee would decide on a response.
