Death of Fr Hughes

NEWS ROUND-UP:THE MAN who created the best Gaelic football nursery in the country passed away yesterday.

Fr Oliver Hughes was the driving force behind St Jarlath’s College in Tuam, who hold a record 12 All-Ireland senior colleges football titles.

The 66-year old passed away yesterday after a brief illness.

Fr Hughes won a Hogan Cup medal in 1961, the only year in which St Jarlath’s have retained the All-Ireland title. He returned as a teacher in 1971 and managed teams that won All-Irelands in the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and as recently as 2002, a team which included Kildare’s James Kavanagh and Galway skipper Michael Meehan.
