The Leinster Council of the GAA has invited representatives from the Fr Manning Gaels and Eire Og clubs to a meeting of the council's executive tomorrow night in Portlaoise (8.0) to discuss Sunday's Leinster club match between the two sides which the Carlow club won by a point in somewhat controversial circumstances.
It is understood that an appeal against the result of the match is being lodged by Fr Manning Gaels over two disputed scores. Their argument is that Leo Turley's first point for Eire Og was a wide and should not have been awarded and that a point from the Fr Manning forward Padraig Davis which was disallowed should have been given.
If both these arguments are upheld the result would be reversed.
Leinster Council secretary, Michael Delaney said yesterday that, although no appeal had been formally lodged up until yesterday evening, the Council was inviting representatives of the two teams to a special meeting of the executive to discuss the issues involved.
"Ironically at last Friday night's meeting we had a discussion about the role of umpires in the game and the possibility of ensuring that goalposts in hurling and football be a different colour to the ball. Then on Sunday we come up with two problems arising out of the kind of situations we had discussed," he said. Fr Manning Gaels manager, Pat Corrigan, yesterday confirmed that the club was accepting the invitation. "We hope to have clearcut video evidence on both issues and believe that a replay would be the fairest way out of the problem. We would hope that Eire Og would be agreeable to this course of action," he said.
