Galway 0-13 Sligo 0-9:CORNER-FORWARD Shane Maughan produced a stunning performance to send Galway through to a Connacht MFC showdown with Mayo.

Maughan hit 0-7, four from play.

Sligo, playing against the wind in the opening half, trailed 0-8 to 0-2 at the break.

Galway hit seven points without reply from the 10th to 27th minute.

But Sligo finished the half strongly with Niall Murphy inches wide with a goal chance before Denis Coffey found the range.

Sligo struggled to eat into the Galway lead after the restart even when Brian Egan reduced the deficit, Maughan responded with a point off either foot to leave it 0-12 to 0-4 .

HOLDERS Mayo got the defence of the Connacht minor crown off to wining start at McHale Park on Saturday evening .

The sides were well-matched in most area apart form the attack where Mayo had a ace in the pack in Cillian O’Connor who finished with 1-6, his goal on 17 minutes turning out to be the decisive score of the game.

Roscommon came with a late surge to narrow the gap to three but it was too late
