ULSTER BANK ALL IRELAND LEAGUE:CLONTARF MADE it four wins from four last night with first half tries from Jamie Chipman, Noel Reid and Ben Barclay sending them on their way to a 25-13 win over Lansdowne at Castle Avenue.
It was Clontarf’s third win over Lansdowne but they were forced to play catch-up early on when, following an interception from Craig Ronaldson, Matt Healy raced clear to score in the left corner.
Richie Lane opened Clontarf’s account with a penalty and the two-time league finalists then forced a series of scrums only for Lansdowne to win a strike against the head.
Clontarf’s pressure finally paid off when Barclay sucked in the Lansdowne cover before offloading to secondrow Chipman who touched down just to the left of the posts.
Then on 21 minutes full back Reid scored under the posts with Lane converting to opening up a double digit lead for Andy Wood’s team.
And although Ronaldson replied with a penalty, Clontarf grabbed their third try of the game when Barclay sold a clever dummy to score.
Lane converted to leave it 22-8 but Lansdowne almost snuck in for a try just before the break with Kieran Essex knocking forward just short of the line.
Lansdowne did manage a try when Healy again crossed over 15 minutes into the second half. However they were unable to make any further ground with Lane landing his second penalty with 15 minutes to go.
In the other game, at Anglesea Road a late drop goal from Dara Fitzpatrick saw Blackrock College condemn Old Belvedere to a fourth successive defeat, 26-23.
