LAOIS, under new manager Michael Dempsey, made a winning start to their Division Two campaign when they travelled to Ennis and defeated Clare. The crucial score came midway through the opening half when Leo Turley scored the game's only goal after a fine build up.

This score helped the winners to lead at half time by a point, having played against the very fresh breeze. Early in the second half they stretched their lead to four points and held this margin to the finish.

Clare will be particularly disappointed at the manner in which their forward line wasted so many scoring opportunities. They were guilty of some atrocious misses and failed to capitalise on at least two excellent goalscoring opportunities An indication of the weakness of their attack is the fact that their top scorer was wing back Pat Vaughan, who contributed three points.

Best for the winners were Emmet Burke, who made a couple of excellent saves, Denis Lalor, Tony Maher, PJ Dempsey and Leo Turley. Clare had their best players in Ciaran O'Mahony, Frankie Griffin, Barry Keating and Pat Vaughan.
