Despite the loss of most of the northern road races due to foot-and-mouth disease, motorcycle racing enjoyed a good season with a full programme of southern road races and short circuit events.

Dermot Birdy of Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan won the MCUI Southern Centre's premier road-racing award, the Hayes Memorial Trophy. Birdy also won the 600cc class. Clare's Les Hart won the 400cc support class while Ian Forristal of New Ross won the 750cc class.

Hilton Hincks from Co Waterford was the most successful short-circuit rider, winning the 250cc Grand Prix short circuit championship with 17 wins. He won the senior title with nine wins and the short circuit Grand Championship on 180 points.
