TONI KROOS and Rafinha scored as Bayern Munich cruised to a 2-0 win at Villarreal in their opening game of Champions League Group A.

Franck Ribery set up Kroos to score after seven minutes and the European heavyweights, making their 250th European Cup appearance, dominated the match from then on.

Bayern always looked the more likely to score as Villarreal struggled to get back into the game, and substitute Rafinha sealed the result with a wonderful piece of skill to create and score the second goal in the 76th.

In Group B, Trabzonspor’s Ondrej Celustka struck 14 minutes from time to stun 2010 winners Inter Milan and clinch a 1-0 away win in the Turkish side’s group stage debut.

The visitors, who had two players suspended and coach Senol Gunes banned from the bench, had goalkeeper Tolga Zengin to thank for some smart saves late on.

In the groups’s other game, a late double by Seydou Doumbia cost Lille dearly in their opener as CSKA Moscow snatched a 2-2 draw at the French champions.

Striker Doumbia struck in the 72nd and 90th minute to steal a point after Lille had taken a clear lead thanks to Moussa Sow and Benoit Pedretti, who scored either way of the interval.

In Manchester United’s Group C, FC Basel earned a 2-1 win over Champions League debutants Otelul Galati.

The Swiss side took a first-half lead through Fabian Frei before Marius Pena levelled for the Romanians just before the hour in the Group C game.

Otelul were worth a point until Marco Streller was judged to have been fouled in the penalty area and Alexander Frei, the Swiss national team’s record goalscorer, stepped forward to convert the penalty in the 84th minute.

Real Madrid began the quest to win their 10th title in Europe’s premier club competition with a 1-0 victory at Dinamo Zagreb in Group D.

Argentine winger Angel Di Maria scored in the 53rd minute as Real, playing in an unfamiliar all-red kit, finally beat the inspired Ivan Kelava in the Dinamo goal

The only blot on the night for the Spanish team was the 73rd-minute dismissal of left back Marcelo for diving in the home penalty area. It was his second yellow card.

Bafetimbi Gomis missed two gilt-edged chances for Olympique Lyon as the French team shared a 0-0 draw with Ajax Amsterdam in the other game in the group.

A cross from Michel Bastos bounced off Gomis’s foot and went over the bar and the Lyon striker also missed the target after being set up by Jimmy Briand.

Unmarked winger Miralem Sulejmani came closest to scoring for Ajax eight minutes before the interval, his header going wide when he only had goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to beat.
