Noel Barr just failed to make it two winter league wins in a row at Lucan golf club when he was pipped on the final day by Austin McLoughlin. McLoughlin, a former member of Lucan's Senior Cup squad, but now out to a 10 handicap, showed all his experience to score 227 for the four best cards to beat Barr by two shots. Aidan Buggle, who finished runner-up for the past three years, again just missed out. The nine handicapper also finished on 229, but lost out to Barr on the countback.
Lucan's winter league was started in 1966 in the old clubhouse by Iggy Barr, Noel Barr, Kevin Barr, Kevin Breslin, the late "Shada" Barr and Sheamie Malone, a past captain. The competition has proved a very exciting and worthwhile winter programme for the Lucan members. The Barr brothers have dominated the league over the last 32 years, winning it 11 times. Iggy took the title four times, before moving on to play his golf in Co Louth, Noel won three, while Kevin and "Shada" made the winner's enclosure on two occasions each.
