Daniel Kinahan, the leader of the Kinahan cartel and a member of the “super cartel” that runs about a third of the European cocaine market, was arrested last week in Dubai, where he has lived openly for years.

The 48-year-old Dubliner will go on trial before the Special Criminal Court, assuming he is extradited from Dubai.

In today’s episode of the In the News Podcast, Irish Times Crime Editor Conor Lally explains the significance of Kinahan’s arrest, the single charge he is expected to face and what this all means for the future of the cartel.

Lally also reveals how evidence will be presented in court relating to at least two murders, and two attempted killings, linked to the Kinahan-Hutch feud.

In each case the State will allege Kinahan assumed the role of gang director as the killings and attempted killings were being planned.

Presented by Conor Pope. Produced by Suzanne Brennan.
