WORLD CUP CONTROVERSY

PETER QUINN,

PETER QUINN,

Sir, - Many thanks to Kevin Myers for doing his bit in restoring a bit of sanity to the nation. I refer to the marvellous pieces he wrote in his Irishman's Diary during the week. When all the world and his wife were taking up arms and people were in danger of imploding on their own extreme positions, Kevin Myers was able to see the funny side of the Roy Keane affair. I found his articles a great corrective to some of the invective displayed on all sides. We need more of this healing balm, and the catharsis that wit and light-heartedness provide.

I hope that all the parties involved in the dispute will, in time, emerge as better and wiser people. I would like to wish the Irish team all the best of luck and good wishes for their World Cup games. - Yours, etc.,

PETER QUINN, Raheen Gardens, Limerick.

Sir, - I have followed the World Cup controversy with great interest. It is a shame that it happened but that cannot be changed. So, rather that concentrating on the negatives, let us all support the team as much as possible.

We will never know how well Ireland would have done with Roy Keane, so there is no point in speculating. I wish Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane all the best with their futures. For now, however, I just now want the team to do their best. I will be giving them my 100 per cent support, as part of the four-strong Irish contingent here in Ho Chi Minh City. - Yours, etc.,

BRIAN O'REILLY, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Sir, - By the time you receive this, I will be on my way to Japan to support Ireland. The good has been taken out of Ireland's World Cup adventure by the small-spirited, unrepentant attitude of Roy Keane.

Whatever the rights and wrongs, management or FAI errors, the bottom line is that the ex-captain first walked out on his squad and his country. The ensuing drama ensured a depleted squad and the prevention of a talented player taking his place.

Keane speaks of the damage having been done - it was; by him. The major damage is to the squad's morale, the supporters and the country. Others deem it an honour to play for their country, but for Roy Keane, his feelings and pain and pride are more important. - Yours, etc.,

STEPHANIE BATT, Dalkey, Co Dublin.

Sir, - There are two words in the English language that I don't want ever to hear again: Roy Keane. - Yours, etc.,

PETER MURRAY, Cahervade, Co Kerry.
