Up with election posters

Sir, – At the last local election I stood as a communist candidate in the Clondalkin ward in Dublin. I was one of the first people to be involved in the local Tidy Towns group in our village and had put two years of hard work into this, being out each Tuesday evening and Saturday morning. I enjoyed it immensely and felt a sense of public duty.

As soon as I put my few minuscule posters up (I had no money and made them myself with my children), I was criticised for degrading the local space. Some of the critics were from the local Tidy Towns committee I was a member of. Some of these people were against my politics and used my posters as a means to attack my message.

Posters are a simple way that some of us who have no financial means use to promote our message. It is called democracy.
