Turkey and the EU

Sir, – The fate of the Turkish newspaper Zaman offers a timely wake-up call for EU politicians, elected and otherwise. The fact that the EU is preparing to place its trust in one Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the only game in town shows just how catastrophic the current situation has become. Of course Mr Erdogan will be a winner all the way with billions of euro, visa-free travel for 80 million Turkish people and further commitments on EU membership, while the EU will have to accept whatever limited co-operation is on offer while also swallowing the inevitable duplicity. If history is any guide, then Mr Erdogan will be more than pleased to continue waving fellow Muslims towards EU frontiers. – Yours, etc,

CONOR O’BRIEN,
