TREATMENT OF CIRCUS ANIMALS

NUALA O'BRIEN,

NUALA O'BRIEN,

Madam, - So Fossetts Circus wants €80,000 of Arts Council funding to ensure its survival? Will Fossetts consider becoming an animal-free circus in return? The State already condones and supports enough animal suffering and cruelty (e.g. hare coursing, live exports, etc.) without paying subventions to a business which keeps big cats in tiny cages, elephants shackled for 23 hours daily and a myriad of other abuses.

Whatever about the achievements of its human performers, the imprisonment of wild animals for our entertainment is not art; it is simply cruel and degrading. - Yours, etc.,

NUALA O'BRIEN,
