Time to put down the Lions?

Sir, – The Lions are an anachronism and should be put down. In a time of global diminution when the Northern Hemisphere countries play their Southern counterparts on a regular basis, what is the purpose of this amalgamation of disparate parts?

The ongoing events in Australia amount to a humiliation for the rugby nations of these islands being outplayed and defeated by an – at best – mediocre Australian team. Scotland has no player on the team; England, the powerhouse of rugby in these islands, has two players selected; we are suffering the indignity of having one of our greatest ever players discarded at the end of his illustrious career and the team is dominated by the Welsh selected by their own coach. This is a recipe for ill feeling and dissent. Put an end to the Lions and its suffering. – Yours, etc,
