Ticket machines and receipts

Sir, – Whatever about the parking situation at Irish Rail stations (June 26th), the poor design of the automated ticket machines at stations along the Dublin Dart line is not only frustrating to users but also unhelpful to keeping the environment clean.

A simple “Do you want a receipt?” option presented to ticket purchasers at these machine would remove the problem of credit and debit card receipts clogging up the ticket collection trays and the confetti effect that greets commuters every day at stations. Instead, these receipts are automatically printed along with the tickets, when obviously, they are not wanted.

The user experience research involved for Irish Rail is simple: go to the nearest bank ATM, use it, and observe.

If banks can offer an option to prevent waste and improve our environment, then so can Irish Rail. – Yours, etc,
