Sir, - In the article by Aine de Paor, Church Consults about Mass Exodus, (April 29th), Mr Niall O'Byrne of Limerick is quoted as saying that many people feel "the 10 Commandments are old hat and irrelevant . . .".
This quotation, if correct, is such a mind-boggling example of contemporary "enlightened" thoughtlessness that the good Bishop of Limerick is clearly wasting his time in seeking to consult with it. It may, indeed, be that many people prefer the golden calf, riotous Sundays, meaningless oaths, contempt of parents, murder, depravity, pillage, unbridled desire, falsehood and adultery - which are the alternatives to the Ten Commandments - but hardly the vast majority of us.
The Pope has said that we are faced with "a culture of death". The above quotation defines such a culture in eight words of profound, disturbing and bombastic ignorance. It would be reassuring to think that Mr O'Byrne was misquoted or misunderstood. - Yours, etc., Eoin Neeson,
Blackrock, Co. Dublin.
