Sir, - As one of thousands who for years suffered from LBS (Last Bus Syndrome), I would like to draw your attention to a sea change in Dublin lifestyle. During a recent visit home, on a Saturday night, I went into town from the outer suburbs with some friends by bus.
As 11 o'clock approached it began to feel the symptoms of LBS coming on looking at the time every 30 seconds, trying to remember when the last bus leaves and deceiving yourself that it was 11.30 and not 11.15, eyeing your last drink to synchronise the last gulp with the dash to the bus stop. I was alone in my suffering, however, because my companions, who in the 1970s had shared with me the ignominy of the long trek to the outer suburbs, seemed completely cured of LBS.
At two o'clock we left the pub, to find the city centre awash with joyful revellers who were safe in the knowledge that the late night bus would wing them home. This is indeed a country for young men. - Yours etc.,
