Madam, - The paucity of Irish sporting talent is highlighted by the short-list for the Texaco sports awards. The inclusion of Lord Clifton Wrottesley and Damian Duff must surely bring into focus the dearth of true world-class Irish sporting stars. Fourth place in the downhill tea-tray and a "wonderful display against Saudi Arabia" could not, by any stretch of the imagination, amount to earth-shattering performances.
Padraig Harrington, Dermott Lennon, Sam Lynch and Tony McCoy did set the world alight in their particular disciplines, but outside this quartet the picture is barren and it is time the sporting authorities in this country woke up to this fact. - Yours, etc.,
F.V. HARTY,
My Lady's Mile,
