TALKING TURKEY ABOUT IRELAND

JENNIFER CARROLL,

JENNIFER CARROLL,

Madam, - Having observed at first hand the human rights abuses in Turkey that are the justification for delaying its accession to the EU, I have returned to the land of a thousand welcomes to find the same problems in our own self-satisfied society.

How the people and Government of this country could reasonably have considered themselves in a position to decide the fate of their European neighbours is quite startling.

On any day you can read about the grossly inadequate provision of housing, healthcare and education services for our most vulnerable citizens, the denial of minorities' rights, asylum-seekers shunned and corruption rife in business and political life. Will someone please tell me the differences between the Irish and Turkish socio-economic situation? The only one I can see is that we have the infrastructure and financial resources at our disposal to overcome many of these social woes.
