Madam, – Roughly 12 years ago, my wife and I travelled to Mexico for a holiday. The country was attempting to attract European tourists and encourage people to come and see the beautiful country. While we were there, we basked in the sun and enjoyed the great local food and culture and we were endeared by the friendliness and warmth of the Mexican people.
My wife and I saved hard for our holiday to Mexico, and while we did not stay in some of the more plush hotels, our accommodation was more than reasonably adequate, although it was slightly outside the main town centre “Playa del Carmen”. However it was a short journey in the friendly taxi service, costing $3. The journey was short – and cheap, but it was a bumpy one.
The road to the town centre was treacherous and potholes ubiquitous. I clearly remember the effort that the taxi drivers had to put into swerving from left to right and right to left and back again, just to miss some of the more unforgiving craters.
Thank God it was an enjoyable holiday, because I am now reminded of it every time I drive down the R132 Dublin road, leaving Balrothery in North Co Dublin. Now I’m the driver swerving from left to right, right to left and back again. The main difference now, is that I don’t get a bottle of Corona when my journey ends. Come on amigos, get the roads sorted! – Yours, etc,
