Strong language and the Army

Sir , – The excessive and unacceptable use of foul language in RTÉ's documentary Recruits marred what was otherwise an interesting spotlight on Army recruit training. If this is the current norm in recruit training, then the Army has a problem. Professional and experienced instructors do not need to resort to such theatrics to motivate recruits.

Army training is robust and each scene depicted in the programme has a purpose in developing the recruit. At its core is forming the character of the soldier, inculcating discipline and team spirit. It is never about breaking the recruit.

The production showed graphically the challenges involved in the transition from civilian to soldier. This was authentic. In the end, the real stars of the programme were the recruits themselves. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Perhaps Peter Hanrahan (September 1st) would prefer an alternative NCO training our recruits – a "Non-Cursing Officer". – Yours, etc,
