Trump exposes his knowledge of war strategy

Importance of a ground operation might be lost on the US president

Sir, - With regard to US attacks on Iran, many questions remain. While modern wars can be fought in the air, a ground operation is still required to achieve actual victory (“Americans left asking ‘what next’ after Trump leads country into war,” March 2nd). Donald Trump now states his air-only war against Iran could last four weeks.

What happens at the end of that time period? What happens if a reconstituted autocratic regime is still in place in Tehran? What happens if Iran is still able to construct ballistic missiles?

What happens if Iran’s nuclear material programme is still operational to some extent?

And, perhaps a more important question - what happens if US Congress votes to oppose Trump’s war campaign? Does Trump bother to consider the ramifications of these questions? - Yours, etc,

Sir, - Donald Trump refers to the governor of California as Gavin ”Newscum” and he changes Taylor to “Traitor” when referring to Marjorie Taylor Greene. We can all remember references to “Sleepy” Joe Biden and “Crooked” Hillary Clinton, among others.

This sort of childish name-calling is something most normal people grow out of in their early teens. Regardless of what’s currently happening in the world, it should be of great concern that the president of the United States has yet to do so. - Yours, etc,

Sir, - The United Nations. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

Donald Trump has proven time and time again that the organisation is now a spent force. - Yours, etc,

Sir, - I wonder will the Board of Peace be convened by its chairman, US president Donald Trump, to consider the war on Iran. That would be an interesting meeting considering the stated purpose of the board is to promote peacekeeping around the world. - Yours, etc,

Cabinteely,
