Madam, - Your newspaper's coverage of the Cian O'Connor affair has given the impression that he is now something of a pariah within the sport.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Many of those who love showjumping and are deeply involved in it can see beyond the current controversy to the days not so long ago when this young man transformed the slightly dowdy and elitist image of the sport in Ireland with his charisma and down-to-earth charm.

We can also remember his significant contributions to the success of his country in the Samsung Nations Cup League, and his seemingly tireless efforts to encourage and train young Irish riders over the years.

I was delighted to see the event director of the Belfast International Horse Show extend a warm welcome to Cian O'Connor in December, and comment that "he is still Olympic Champion" in her eyes. In many people's eyes, he will always be a champion, no matter what the outcome of the current case. - Yours, etc.,
