Sir, – I wish to correct assertions made in Diarmuid Ó Briain’s letter (June 2nd). Scouting Ireland values and acknowledges the wonderful work done by our sister Girl Guide organisations for girls and young women since their foundation 100 years ago. We are proud and privileged to be associated with these organisations and their substantial contribution to Irish society and communities nationwide should be appreciated by all.
Scouting Ireland recognises the strength and validity of the Girl Guide learning model which parallels our own. Guiding and scouting were never more relevant or important to Ireland as we seek to rebuild our country.
Mr Ó Briain was incorrect to say that the Girl Guide organisations refused an option to merge with Scouting Ireland. No such proposal was ever discussed between our organisations.
The modest State funding received by the Girl Guide organisations is a well-directed investment that is more than matched by the voluntary commitment of thousands of guide leaders week in week out in working with young people.
Scouting Ireland values its links with Girl Guiding and looks forward to working alongside them for another 100 years in the interests of young people of Ireland. – Yours, etc,
