Sir, - The fact that some ancient castles (erstwhile unroofed) here in Finland have been sensitively turned into internationally renowned opera, orchestra and theatre venues without harming the fabric of their ancient structures has prompted me to write this letter.
Richard Wentges's reasons for supporting the proposed 21st-century roof for Cashel Cathedral (November 6th) are entirely valid. With sensitive structural consolidation and a glass roof allowing natural light to filter in, the cathedral could function as a magnificent theatre of national and international significance where plays set in medieval times could be enacted in genuine medieval surroundings. The acoustic qualities of the interior could make a superb orchestra and opera venue. The cathedral could also function as a large state-of-the-art conference centre. All this could be set within its ancient architecture - a unique blend of the old with the new.
Prof Stalley need not worry, for the architectural fabric, structure and significance of the site would remain the same. - Yours, etc.,
Niall Donoghue,Jyvaskyla,
Finland.
