Sir, – Frank Walsh's point about the cost of new printers vis-à-vis ink cartridges is well made (Letters, August 14th).
Living near Cardigan in Wales at the turn of the millennium, I bought, for £20, a second-hand printer from the proprietor of my usual stationery shop, and am still using it.
Mr Walsh may like to know that, rather than pay exorbitant prices for ink cartridges, you may refill your own.
However, some manufacturers are rumoured to incorporate firmware into their printers which causes them to stop working after a certain interval. Enforced obsolescence, if you like. Thankfully, my old printer was built before such appalling cynicism kicked in. – Yours, etc,
