Sir, – I was surprised to read the rather snide criticism of Monsignor Vincent Twomey (August 6th) by Fr Brendan Hoban, Parish Priest of Ballina, a founder member of the Association of Catholic Priests, when he stated: “The association does not share in the Irish media’s presumption that having tea with the Pope once a year confers by osmosis some kind of creeping infallibility on Fr Twomey or anyone else”.

Fr Hoban and his association espouse, inter alia, married priests, ordination of women to the priesthood and an Irish Catholic church completely independent of Rome.

If the members of the association really believe in what the say and write should they not resign their ministries and take the honourable step, as Martin Luther did? – Yours, etc,
