Pressures on RTÉ

Madam, – Your Editorial, (April 25th) made for interesting reading. It is correct to suggest that RTÉ must demonstrate that the licence fee is directed solely toward public service broadcasting and that the purely commercial elements of the service should bear the brunt of any cuts.

I lived in California for four years and to endure the lowest common denominator of television and radio service was unbearable. It was pathetic to listen to the one decent struggling station plead with its listeners for funds to survive. Thank you to The Irish Timesfor highlighting the salient issues. RTÉ is a national treasure and its public service broadcasting must be safeguarded now. – Is mise,
