Sir, - I strongly agree with Gearoid Kilgallen's comments (August 22nd) on the intense media coverage of the Leaving Cert examination. Those who are directly involved - students, their families and teachers - know full well when the results are to be issued. But the coverage starts on radio, TV and newspapers at least 24 hours in advance and it becomes the leading item on news bulletins from daybreak on. I am becoming more and more convinced that it is the media coverage and not the points system which puts unnecessary pressure on young people and their families.

How are 17-year-olds expected to cope with this media barrage? The only other group in our society who are put under such a spotlight regarding their achievements are professional athletes - and then only when they have reached the top in their sport. But they at least are mature adults and are likely to have some psychological preparation. It would seem that the media are cynically using 17-year-olds to provide news fodder at a time of year when "serious" news is scarce. Maybe The Irish Times could start redressing the balance by choosing a more student-friendly and less aggressive title for its otherwise excellent education column. - Yours, etc.,
