President and Armagh service

Sir, – In “If the President had gone to Armagh, Sinn Féin would have gone too” (Opinion & Analysis, October 16th), Pat Leahy says that the consequences of President Higgins’s decision not to attend the partition service in Northern Ireland are “polarisation, tension and alienation”.

The President made that decision a month ago, and the debate in the public sphere has largely died down.

That is what prompts me to ask whether it is the President or is it Irish Times columnists like Pat Leahy who are actually the most interested in prolonging “polarisation, tension and alienation” on this matter now. – Yours, etc,
