Sir, There has been much discussion over the past few weeks concerning the polling figures for the various constituencies in which there exists a nationalist majority. This has been particularly true of the new constituency of West Tyrone.
White there has not previously been a General Election with the new boundaries, it is possible to measure past voting patterns within the wards which now make up the new constituency.
The 1996 vote, many commentators believe, may change as traditional SDLP voters will revert back to that party. In addition, there has historically been a swing from Sinn Fein to the SDLP in General elections vis a vis local elections. People must make their own minds up about which parties will best represent them, but inaccurate electoral results and claims should not figure in this process. - Yours, etc.
