Madam, – Frank McDonald tells us that Dr Edgar Morgenroth of the ESRI will complain to the Comptroller and Auditor General if An Bord Pleanála grants permission for the Slane Bypass (“Planned Slane bypass ‘idiotic’, says expert”, Home News, August 26th).
The current stretch of the N2 through Slane is unfit for purpose. The steep gradients and sharp bends that run from the north to the south side of the village have been the scene of 22 fatalities, countless injuries and near-misses and it is certain that more will occur unless action is taken. Despite the well-publicised, appalling road safety record, the current 30km speed limit through Slane village is ignored by all except the people who live here. Policing of this speed limit can best be described as patchy.
As residents of Slane, we find it unacceptable that we are expected to put our lives at risk on the roads throughout our village every day. The Slane bypass is the only viable alternative to solving this problem once and for all.
One wonders how much value the Comptroller and Auditor General puts on lives these days? – Yours, etc,
