Penalty points and road safety

Sir, – The new proposals announced by Minister for Transport Shane Ross are to be welcomed. However, the underlying problem with all motoring offences is enforcement. It would appear that the Garda simply does not have the resources to deal with both speeding and drink-driving offences. Greater enforcement either by increased Garda numbers or perhaps a more efficient use of speed cameras would show motorists that there is a greater chance of “getting caught” and increase compliance with the law.

I recently drove extensively in Australia, where the speed limits are strictly enforced and the net result is that the limits are largely obeyed. There are also tough penalties, both points and fines, imposed on a graduated scale. – Yours, etc,

DAVID McCLEAN,
